UNESCO is not only known for protecting monuments of exceptional cultural or natural significance, but it also works to preserve traditional wellness and spa practices. Some of these practices have been recognized as important to many communities around the world and are now included on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
Jamu – A Natural Medicine in a Glass
In Bali, Indonesia, visitors have the opportunity to try Jamu, a medicinal drink made from ginger, turmeric, lime, and tamarind. Jamu is deeply rooted in Indonesian tradition, where women collect the necessary plants from their gardens to make it.
It is used to treat various ailments, most commonly for balancing body temperature. When served cold, it helps lower the temperature of those with a fever, while hot Jamu is used to alleviate cold symptoms.
Yoga – Mental and Physical Peace
Over five thousand years old, yoga originated in India and is one of the most important cultural and health practices recognized by UNESCO. In addition to physical activity, yoga includes a spiritual dimension, as it aims to achieve balance between the body and mind through meditation and controlled breathing.
In India, yoga is available to everyone, regardless of social status or religion, and tourists can enjoy yoga classes at beautiful locations, from the Himalayas to famous beaches. Additionally, they can attend yoga schools and become certified yoga instructors.
Nuad Thai Massage – The Art of Healing
The well-known Thai health practice, Nuad Thai Massage, is also on the UNESCO list. This ancient method aims to release blockages in the body’s energy channels and restore balance.
It is believed that the human body has 72,000 energy channels, known as “sen.” Opening these channels restores harmony between the four basic elements: earth, fire, air, and water. In this way, the massage is not just a therapeutic treatment but also a spiritual practice.
Acupuncture – Chinese Energy Restoration Method
Acupuncture has been present in China for over 4,000 years and is deeply rooted in traditional medicine. This practice involves the fine art of positioning needles at specific points on the skin to release blockages in the life energy known as “qi.” Chinese philosophy emphasizes that the balance between the opposing forces of “yin” and “yang” is essential for health, and acupuncture helps to distribute energy properly throughout the body.
All of these practices included on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage represent a unique bridge between ancient and modern methods of health preservation. Whether through herbal drinks, physical therapy, or meditation, these practices not only contribute to health but also enrich spiritual life.
