- DESTINATIONS
If you are looking for a special Christmas destination in Europe, the small German town of Gengenbach could be added to your list. This town is famous for its unique holiday tradition—the town hall is transformed every December into a giant Advent calendar.
The Town Hall as a Festive Attraction
From November 30 to December 24, every day at exactly 6:00 p.m., one of the 24 windows of the town hall is illuminated, revealing a new artistic motif. This tradition has been upheld since 1996 and today represents one of the most visited Christmas attractions in Germany.
Art, Lights, and the Christmas Market
Each year, the window designs are created by a renowned artist. For the 2025/2026 season, the motifs were designed by illustrator Olaf Hajek, whose work is recognized worldwide. The square in front of the town hall turns into a Christmas market, where visitors can enjoy mulled wine, traditional German pastries, and a festive atmosphere.
When to Visit Gengenbach
If you cannot arrive before Christmas, there is no need to worry. The complete Advent calendar remains on display until January 6. This makes Gengenbach an attractive destination throughout the New Year holiday period as well.
Why Visit Gengenbach in Winter?
Thanks to its combination of historic surroundings, Christmas lights, and an authentic German holiday atmosphere, this town is considered one of the most beautiful winter destinations in Germany.
