Train travel has become an increasingly popular choice among tourists across Europe in recent years. More and more travelers are opting for a slower, more comfortable way of exploring the continent, avoiding the stress of airports and the restrictions associated with air travel. This type of mobility is actively encouraged by the European Union through the DiscoverEU program. It offers young people a unique opportunity to explore European destinations free of charge.

More Than 40,000 Tickets for Young Travelers in 2026

As part of a special edition marking “40 Years of Schengen”, the European Union will distribute over 40,000 free train tickets throughout 2026. The initiative aims to help young people discover Europe’s cultural diversity, architecture, gastronomy, and everyday life across different countries.

This program is part of the broader Erasmus+ framework. It has long been considered one of the most attractive opportunities for young people eager to travel and gain new experiences.

Who Can Apply and How the Process Works

Applications for the new round are open from April 8 to April 22, 2026, and must be submitted via the European Youth Portal. Eligible applicants are those who are 18 years old—specifically, young people born between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2008. Candidates can apply individually or as a group of friends, making it easier to plan a shared travel experience.
