One of Norway’s most impressive attractions, the Trollstigen mountain road, has reopened to traffic after being closed for necessary repair work. This spectacular scenic route once again draws visitors eager to experience the thrill of driving through the wild landscapes of western Norway.
A Link Between Valley and Mountain
Trollstigen, meaning “The Trolls’ Road,” connects the towns of Åndalsnes and Valldal, offering breathtaking views from the deep Isterdalen Valley all the way up to the Stigøra plateau. This stretch is part of Norway’s network of most beautiful scenic roads, attracting thousands of domestic and international tourists each year.
Now Safer and More Accessible
Thanks to the reconstruction, the road has been technically upgraded and made safer for drivers—an important improvement considering the challenging terrain. Representatives of local tourism organizations expressed their satisfaction with the reopening, emphasizing the importance of this moment for the entire region.

No Car? No Problem – Viewpoints Remain Open
Even those not traveling by car can enjoy the magic of Trollstigen. The viewpoints at the top of the mountain plateau remain open and can be reached via the Kløvstien hiking trail. This pedestrian route has been accessible since mid-April and offers unforgettable views of the dramatic landscapes and the valley below.
A Gem Among Norway’s Scenic Routes
Trollstigen is part of the Geiranger–Trollstigen scenic route, one of eighteen official Norwegian Scenic Routes showcasing the country’s most stunning road segments. These routes, totaling 2,240 kilometers, cover a variety of landscapes—from the Lofoten Islands and the dramatic Helgeland coast, with its six ferry crossings, to the famous Atlantic Road with its seven bridges stretching across the Hustadvika Bay.
