Santorini, one of Greece’s most famous islands, has long attracted tourists from around the world with its fairytale architecture and spectacular sunsets. In addition to the challenges posed by mass tourism, the island faced another serious issue earlier this year—seismic activity that disrupted daily life.
A series of earthquakes shook the island
Between late January and February, Santorini and the surrounding areas recorded more than 20,000 minor tremors measuring 1.0 or higher on the Richter scale. The strongest reached a magnitude of 5.3, causing concern among local residents and visitors. As a precautionary measure, authorities declared a state of emergency that extended to nearby islands. Among them were Anafi, Amorgos, and Ios. Many residents, including families with children and seasonal workers, temporarily left the island, while construction work and tourism activities were put on hold.
An island shaped by volcanic forces
Santorini owes its distinctive appearance and dramatic landscapes to its volcanic past. Sitting on the edge of a former volcano, the island is still influenced by the geological forces that created it. The recent earthquakes served as a reminder to both residents and tourists that beneath its stunning surface lies a powerful natural force capable of reshaping the island in an instant.

Returning to normal and preparing for the tourist season
By early March, the situation had stabilized, the state of emergency was lifted, and residents returned to their homes. Schools reopened, and construction projects for hotels and infrastructure resumed ahead of the summer tourist season. However, the question remains. How will recent events impact visitor numbers in the coming months?
Optimistic messages from the tourism sector
Greece’s Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, visited the island and met with local officials and hospitality representatives. She emphasized that Santorini remains one of the world’s most sought-after destinations, known for its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and hospitality. Scientific institutions continue to monitor the seismic situation. Also the preventive measures have already been implemented to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.
With summer approaching, the island is preparing for a new wave of guests eager to enjoy its iconic views and the warm Aegean Sea. Though nature unpredictably shapes its fate, Santorini remains a symbol of Greek beauty and resilience.
