According to the latest edition of the Happy City Index for 2025, Copenhagen has once again confirmed its status as the most livable city in the world. The Danish capital, known for its urban harmony, environmental awareness, and high social standards, takes the number one spot on the global happiness list this year.

Other Nordic cities also made the list, reinforcing the region’s long-standing reputation for stability and quality of life. Aarhus, Denmark’s second city on the list, is ranked fourth, while Stockholm in Sweden also secured a place in the top ten.

Other UK cities in the rankings include York (63rd), Reading (83rd), Manchester (101st) and Bristol (103rd). In the United States, New York City was the highest-ranked at 17th, followed by Minneapolis (30th), San Diego (34th), Washington DC (43rd) and Salt Lake City (56th).
Six Pillars of Urban Well-Being
The Happy City Index bases its rankings on data from six core areas: citizen well-being, governance, environmental quality, economy, health, and mobility. The analysis includes factors such as housing affordability, public safety, green space availability, public transport infrastructure, travel access, language skills, obesity rates, and vacation time.
