The World happiness report 2025 provides insights into the countries where citizens experience the highest levels of life satisfaction. The results, published by the Wellbeing Research Center at the University of Oxford in collaboration with Gallup, reveal that some nations remain at the top of the list, while others have lost their rankings.

Finland remains in first place

For the eighth consecutive year, Finland has retained its title as the happiest country in the world. This Nordic nation leads the ranking thanks to its strong social system, high-quality education, and universal healthcare. Although its GDP per capita is not the highest, factors such as low inequality and strong social security contribute to the overall well-being of its citizens.

Which countries are in the lead?

Alongside Finland, other Scandinavian countries—Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden—dominate the top ranks, with the Netherlands rounding out the top five. Interestingly, countries such as Costa Rica, Israel, and Mexico, which are outside the European continent, have also made it into the top ten. Their success is attributed to a strong sense of community and cultural values that promote individual well-being.

The United States has continued its downward trend in rankings, placing 24th. This position reflects a long-term decline in Americans’ subjective sense of happiness. On the other hand, Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the list, highlighting the severe challenges faced by its population.

What influences happiness?

According to the research, happiness in a country is not determined solely by economic power but also by the quality of social institutions, freedom, the absence of corruption, and social support. Countries with a higher standard of living and a strong sense of community demonstrate that material prosperity alone is not the key to happiness.

This year’s report confirms that social stability, economic security, and interpersonal relationships are crucial for life satisfaction. Perhaps other nations could learn from the example of these happiest countries and implement similar models in their societies.
