Air passengers in the EU may soon bid farewell to the long-standing rule limiting liquids in carry-on luggage. According to reports, the new regulation could come into force as early as late July or early August 2025, but only at airports equipped with the latest generation of security scanners.

Advanced Technology Changes the Game

The key to this change lies in the introduction of the Hi-Scan 6040 CTix devices, developed by Smiths Detection. These scanners provide a three-dimensional high-resolution image of luggage contents and use sophisticated algorithms to instantly detect hazardous substances. This technology is already in use at several major Italian airports, including Rome, Milan, Bergamo, and Bologna, and is expected to receive official approval from the European Civil Aviation Conference.

No More Removing Electronics or Queues at Security

In addition to allowing larger volumes of liquids, the new generation of scanners offers passengers another benefit. The elimination of the need to remove laptops, tablets, and phones from bags during screening. This means shorter lines, faster passenger flow, and easier preparation for the flight. Why the Restriction Was in Place

The rules introduced in 2006 aimed to prevent liquid explosives from being brought on board. Advances in security technology in recent years have shown that the same level of protection can be achieved without strict volume limits, but the temporary reinstatement of the old rules in 2024 was a precautionary measure while technical concerns were addressed. Updated software and improved systems are now paving the way for more relaxed regulations.

Not All Airports Are Ready

It is important to note that the eased rules will only apply at locations that have invested in modern equipment. At airports with outdated systems, passengers will still need to comply with the 100 ml limit and the standard screening procedure.
