With the arrival of spring, an unusual natural phenomenon takes place in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi—the famous Ice Hotel begins to melt. Its intricate ice sculptures gradually dissolve, and the entire structure returns to the Torne River. However, as winter approaches, artists from around the world once again gather to rebuild this unique accommodation.
Constructing a hotel that lasts only a few months
Since 1989, the Ice Hotel has been rebuilt every winter in Jukkasjärvi, a village located 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Massive blocks of ice are cut from the nearby Torne river and sculpted into luxurious suites and grand hallways. The hotel offers 12 art suites, 15 to 20 classic rooms, and an impressive ceremonial hall.
Today, it is one of Sweden’s most recognizable tourist destinations, especially in winter when temperatures can drop as low as -40°C. Nevertheless, thousands of visitors come each year to witness the northern lights, explore the icy landscapes on snowmobiles, or spend a night in a hotel made entirely of pure ice.

An unforgettable experience sleeping in ice rooms
For an authentic Arctic experience, guests can stay at Ice Hotel Winter, available from December to April. Each artistic suite in the hotel is designed by international artists, ensuring a unique aesthetic and atmosphere. Last season, guests had the chance to sleep in a room with a bed shaped like a seashell or in a suite featuring a giant frozen cat sculpture.
For those seeking an icy adventure even in warmer months, there is Ice Hotel 365. It’s a permanent version of the hotel that remains frozen year-round thanks to a special cooling system. This section includes nine art suites and nine luxury suites with heated bathrooms, some even featuring private saunas and bathtubs.

Cozy accommodation for those who prefer warmth
In addition to its ice rooms, the Ice Hotel complex also offers comfortable Kaamos rooms, designed for guests who prefer a warmer stay. These spacious rooms, decorated in neutral tones and natural materials, are housed in ground-level wooden cabins overlooking the Arctic landscape. In summer, the roofs are covered in flowers, while in winter, snow creates a magical atmosphere.
A unique culinary experience awaits at The Veranda, an exclusive restaurant with only 16 seats, where dishes are prepared using local ingredients and traditional preservation techniques such as smoking and fermentation. Guests can also enjoy light meals and hot drinks at The Lounge bar.

Drinks in ice glasses
A must-visit attraction at the Ice Hotel is the famous Icebar. There everything—from the walls and furniture to the bar counter and glasses—is made of ice from the Torne river. Visitors can sip cocktails from crystal-clear ice glasses while surrounded by artistic ice sculptures.
The Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi is not just a hotel. It is an artistic project and a natural spectacle that comes to life and disappears each year, inviting guests to experience a unique fusion of art, nature, and extreme weather conditions.
