Massage is a method used for centuries now for relaxation and treatment and relief of pain in the body. The first records of a massage treatment come from 3000 BC, when the Chinese and Indians used it to alleviate pain caused by exhaustive physical work. Since then, massage has been used as a good method for improving both physical and mental health.
There are many types of massage, but one of the most popular ones in wellness and spa centers is volcanic rock massage. It involves placing warm stones along the body, the so-called main energetic centers or chakras. There are seven major chakras in the body: the back, the stomach, the chest, the palms and the feet , on which volcanic stones alternate during the massage, 45 of them, different in size and shape. Stones are heated in separate containers in a chrome-containing water with a temperature between 42 and 43 degrees celsius. A therapist then puts natural oils on the heated stones that help them glide, nurture, and cherish your skin. Before putting the stones on your body, the therapist warms their own hands and gently massages the skin and then proceeds with massaging your muscles with the stones. This treatment lasts for 90 minutes.
The volcanic rock massage originates from ancient Indians who used to heat up the stones from rivers, shaped by volcanic lava, and then use them for the treatment of various diseases. During the process of putting the stones on the body of the ill, various ritual dances were performed and different prayers were sung.
The treatment with volcanic rocks calms the nervous system, accelerates blood circulation and cleans the body of accumulated toxins. This method was proved to be effective in relieving PMS symptoms and helping people with insomnia. It is also recommended for people with muscular and joint pain problems, because heat from the stones increases the blood flow in the muscles, reduces pain and affects the flexibility of the joints. When it comes to people with inflammatory joint diseases, alternating hot massage with cold stones is recommended.
However, this type of massage is not recommended to heart disease patients, people with high blood pressure, people with varicose veins, pregnant women and those with some type of a skin infection, as it may aggravate the condition. It should also be avoided during the menstrual cycle.
