In the mountainous province of Guizhou, in southwest China, a monumental construction project is nearing completion. The bridge that spans the vast Huajiang Grand Canyon, also known as the “Earth Crack,” is set to become the tallest in the world, soaring to an impressive 625 meters (2,051 feet) above the river. This will surpass the current record-holder, France’s Millau Viaduct, by nearly 300 meters.

A Transportation Revolution in a Remote Region

Stretching almost 2.9 kilometers (9,482 feet) in length, the colossal structure is a suspension bridge with steel trusses weighing a total of 22,000 tons — roughly the weight of three Eiffel Towers. Once opened to traffic, it will allow vehicles to cross the canyon in just 60 seconds. Travel that previously took hours will be reduced to a single minute, bringing significant improvements to everyday life and transportation efficiency across the region.

A Symbol of National Ambition and Technological Power

For decades, China has focused on developing its infrastructure, especially in geographically challenging and underdeveloped regions. Guizhou, located about 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) west of Shenzhen, stands as a symbol of that effort. According to Zhang Shenglin, chief engineer at Guizhou Highway Group, the project is entering its final phase and is expected to be fully operational in the second half of 2025.
